2025 Reference architecture

The reference architecture is based on the architectural vision for the Swiss data ecosystem and provides a shared, structured framework for the design and ongoing development of data spaces in Switzerland. It serves as a guide for decision-makers, specialist authorities and technical teams responsible for implementation, allowing them to design reusable and scalable solutions.

The 2025 reference architecture describes how to structure a data space to ensure consistency. It indicates which elements are necessary in order for organisations to share and use data in a secure, controlled and interoperable way. It also proposes a shared model that stakeholders can use to plan, compare and develop their data spaces.

The reference architecture consists of data space modules, which themselves are made up of components. A module is a set of interrelated functionalities that can be deployed and combined with other modules to form a data space. Modules cover a range of functionalities, such as those related to motivation, governance and interaction between participants. A component represents a specific functionality within a module. Components are more granular than modules and have clearly defined boundaries.

The reference architecture offers the following benefits in particular:

  • It provides stakeholders with guidance and support when making decisions. For example, it highlights the components that need to be included in a data space within the data ecosystem.
  • It enables a shared, intuitive approach by integrating the phases of the data life cycle.
  • It documents best practices, thereby allowing experiences to be shared, ensuring time savings and reducing errors.
  • It forms the basis for interoperability between data and data spaces.
  • It improves transparency, thereby promoting communication between different interest groups.

The reference architecture replaces the document on basic data space modules, which can be found in the archives (see below).
