Terminology

What is terminology ?

Terminology is first of all the vocabulary of LSP (langage for special purpose, also known as special language).

It is also the science of both the concepts and terms of specialised vocabularies (terminology science) and terminological working methods.

What is Terminology for ?

Terminology work provides tranlators with effective assistance in their day to day work: it helps prevent terminological dispersion, making it easier for new translators to become familiar with their field.
If high quality terminology work is carried out from the outset when new legislation is being drafted, this will assist in providing the regulatory area concerned with a clear conceptual structure.

Terminology in the federal administration

Well-organised and co-ordinated interdepartmental terminology work, the results of which are accessible to all via a database such as TERMDAT encourages an interdisciplinary approach as well as co-operation among the departments.

The Terminology Section of the Federal Chancellery is responsible for the coordination of terminology work at federal level.
