Federal Chancellor Corinaa Casanova acts as the Federal Council's chief of staff. She supports the President and the Federal Council in the performance of their duties and executes tasks related to the Federal Assembly vested in her by the constitution and the law. Together with the Vice-Chancellors, she attends the weekly meetings of the Federal Council in a consultative capacity but also has the right to table motions.
Corina Casanova, from Vrin and Ruschein, was born in Ilanz on 4 January 1956. She grew up in the Graubünden villages of Tarasp and Ruschein where she attended primary school. After obtaining her high school leaving certificate from the cantonal school in Chur in 1977, she studied law at the University of Fribourg. She completed her studies in 1982 with a Masters in Laws. In 1984 she was appointed to the bar in canton Graubünden, after which she spent two years working at the law practice of the former president of the Federal Supreme Court, Dr. Giusep Nay. Between 1986 and 1990 she was a delegate for the International Committee of the Red Cross in South Africa, Angola, Nicaragua and El Salvador.
In 1992, Corina Casanova was appointed Delegate for Information at the Parliamentary Services of the Federal Assembly. After holding that position for four years she joined the staff of Federal Councillor Flavio Cotti at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). In 1999, Federal Councillor Joseph Deiss made her his personal advisor. The Federal Council appointed Corina Casanova Deputy Secretary-General of the DFA in April 2002. She was appointed Vice-Chancellor on 27 April 2005 with effect from 1 August 2005.
Corina Casanova has completed language stays in Italy (Perugia), USA (Florida) and Mexico (Guadalajara) and speaks six languages: Romansh (Sursilvan and Vallader), German, French, Italian, English and Spanish.
